Reserve your marked down Silverado

Even if you’ve never needed to use OnStar® in your car to get emergency assistance, you probably have great peace of mind knowing it’s there. This is why a recent announcement from General Motors may come as a surprise: OnStar is now discontinued for older vehicles. Here’s how to determine whether your car is affected and what to do next if it is.

It’s All About the Network

A number of GM models – including Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC, plus legacy brands like Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, and Saab – from early 2015 and before are losing access to OnStar and Connected Services. That’s because the older system uses the Verizon 2G network that’s been phased out in favor of high-bandwidth, high-speed 4G and 5G cellular networks.

Help is Still Available

Although OnStar won’t work the same as it did in your 2013 Chevy Equinox, you aren’t left high and dry if you need help. If you get into an accident, you’re locked out of your vehicle, or you’ve got a flat tire, you will still have access to 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. To get in touch with someone, you can use the OnStar Guardian app or call 1-888-4ONSTAR.

What About a Service Fee?

If there’s one bright spot to in-car OnStar ending, it’s this: with this service having ended, you won’t have to pay for it. If you’ve noticed a little more money in your account recently, that could be the reason.
