If you’ve heard recent chatter about OnStar® being discontinued, you’re not alone. The short answer to “Is OnStar® being discontinued in the United States?” is no, but there are some changes you should know about.
What’s Actually Changing with OnStar®?
General Motors announced that the standalone OnStar® Guardian™ mobile app would be discontinued in July 2024. The app allowed subscribers to use certain OnStar® features—like mobile crash detection, emergency services, and roadside assistance—on their smartphones, even when they weren’t in a GM vehicle. While that app is being phased out, OnStar® services are still very much alive and continuing in GM vehicles.
OnStar® In Your Chevrolet
Chevrolet owners can continue to enjoy the full suite of OnStar® services built directly into their vehicles. From Automatic Crash Response and Stolen Vehicle Assistance to Turn-by-Turn Navigation and in-vehicle Wi-Fi®, these features are part of what makes driving a new Chevrolet such a smart and connected experience. You can manage your services through the in-dash system or the myChevrolet Mobile App, which is not being discontinued.
Do I Need to Do Anything?
If you were an OnStar® Guardian™ subscriber, you would have received communication from GM about the application’s shutdown. However, while opt-in was necessary to use the service, the opt-out was automatic in this case.
