You never want to take a chance with your brakes. Here our Chevrolet service center has some big red flags with your braking system that you don’t want to ignore:

Pedal Problems

A brake pedal should be nice and firm. If it’s soft and spongey, immediately this presents a big safety hazard. You shouldn’t have to step on it until it hits the floor in order to get your car to slow down or stop.

Strange Sounds

When you step on your brakes, they shouldn’t make a sound. If you’re hearing a squeaking or squealing, this is probably related to a brake pad. That noise is actually a built-in warning telling you that the pad is thinning. If, however, you’re hearing a grinding noise, that pad could be worn completely through and now the rotor and caliper are rubbing against each other.

Vibrations

Does your steering wheel shake when you apply the brakes? Or maybe the pedal kind of pulsates? These are indications that something is probably amiss with a rotor, which may need to be resurfaced or replaced.

Bad Smell

Finally, if you smell something burning when braking, this most likely means that the brakes are overheating. This could be due to worn-out discs or perhaps the pads were installed incorrectly. No matter the reason, if this happens when you’re driving, you’ll want to pull over immediately.
